Babu Owino cannot seek re-election as SONU leader after President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the Universities Amendment Act (2016).
According to the bill, a university leader will hold office for a one-year term and can only seek re-election once.
The act effectively blocks perennial students leaders like Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, who has been at the helm of University of Nairobi students union since 2010.
The act also disqualifies anyone who has been a member of a students council for two terms from such elections in any university in the country.
The act also seeks to regulate campaign finances with penalties for offences related to elections.
