Lecturers have called off their two month long strike. The university staff went on strike two months ago demanding the implementation of a collective bargaining agreement signed between them and the government in 2013.
The union officials have called off the industrial action only a day after saying that they were willing to go back to work should the government offer Ksh. 14.8 Billion to cater for their salary increase. The lecturers a week ago rejected a Ksh. 10 Billion offer from the government arguing that they needed not less than 40 Billion shillings to call off the strike.
Details have emerged that university lecturers agreed to call off the said strike after reaching an agreement with the government over pay. According to a source, the government has signed a new CBA with the lecturers promising them better working conditions and allowances.
The lecturers are said to have agreed on a 17.5% pay hike deal and will be going back to the lecture halls as soon as tomorrow. Students have already been informed of the new development and are expected to resume studies tomorrow.
